redi Not So Steady

After several months we were bound to find an ATM provider breaking away from their initial direct charge fee structures once they saw the lie of the land. It appears that that first ATM provider to alter their direct charged fees is rediATM.

Before I go on, it is worth noting that rediATM is not one ATM provider, but essentially a syndicate of smaller ATM providers that have an ATM brand banded together under the rediATM mark and spearheaded by Cuscal. The providers of the ATMs under the rediATM brand are usually the smaller institution such as credit unions.

When is a fee-free transaction not fee-free?

We received the following emails, the first 20th March and the second on 3rd April which we found very interesting and thought should be shared.

Email 1 – 20 March, 2009

I have recently checked my bank statement and have found that I have been charged $2.00 for a withdrawal at the local workers club. I bank with Westpac, but when I questioned the fee was told that it was a charge from the Bank of Western Australia. I was politely put through to Bank West and explained the situation. The main point of my argument was that at the time of withdrawal, there was a change of screen on the ATM which said that I was going to be charged $0.00 for the transaction, so I thought nothing of it and proceeded with the transaction. I thought that the banks have a duty of disclosure to let us (the consumer) decide whether or not we accept the charge. In this instance I feel that I have been mistreated and/or misled as the fee was to be $0.00.

Bank West has said that they will have the ATM checked, but at this stage were not prepared to reimburse my $2.00.

We asked the source to send us a picture if they went back to that venue and the ATM was still showing a charge of $0 and…  Continue reading “When is a fee-free transaction not fee-free?”

Traffic, comments and visitors

It has now passed the 3 week mark since the introduction of ATM direct charging. In that time we have established what the players are charging, piqued the interest of the mainstream media and seen every bank drop their disloyalty fees (it appears Adelaide Bank has given in too).

In the 3 weeks of ATM direct charging, ATM Fee Tracker Australia has seen over 4,000 visits and served almost 15,000 pages. We never really imagined seeing this kind of traffic so early in the website’s life. At least one third of the traffic, if not more, was driven by the mainstream media. We have done radio, newspaper and TV interviews and we thank those journalists for their time.  Continue reading “Traffic, comments and visitors”

$4.80 withdrawal at Commbank in Adelaide

Choice Magazine’s website is also running an ATM Watch page (hey, we are all for competition!), and today we saw that one of their users has again identified an unusually high ATM fee…

I withdrew cash from a commonwealth bank ATM Prospect road, Kilburn SA at 11.30 pm and the fee was $4.80 . This is not my bank

It’s official, no NAB disloyalty fee

We have finally gotten confirmation that the NAB will not charge a disloyalty fee. Media reports also indicate any disloyalty fees charged by the NAB since the 3rd March 2009 will be refunded to their customers.

This leaves the last bank standing with a disloyalty fee as Adelaide Bank. We have asked Adelaide bank if they will be changing their policy, especially given their Bendigo Bank cousins have dropped theirs, but no response has come through as yet.

Commsec approach somewhat unusual

One reader has alerted us to a somewhat unusual approach by Commsec to ATM direct charged fees. Commsec, a subsidiary of CBA, offers customers a cash account of which customers will be charged no ATM operator fee directly. Instead it appears Commsec picks up the tab for the ATM operators fee, and then charges the customer $2.00 for each transaction.  Want to know why is this approach unusual, then read on…. Bendigo Bank disloyalty fee dropped

As of today (16th March 2009), Bendigo Bank has released a supplement the their schedule of fees document to indicate the previous $0.10 disloyalty fee for using a foreign-ATM is now NIL. However Adelaide Bank, who are part of the same commercial group and had the same disloyalty fee policy, have not added the same amendment. We will ask Adelaide Bank if the change is coming.

Bank West has also confirmed they have dropped their disloyalty fee since our post on March 12th. We are still trying to get confirmation from NAB that they will drop their disloyalty fee. NAB’s fee tables still show a $0.50 disloyalty fee for most accounts, and NAB customer service did not answer our direct question on this issue (par for the course with many of these banks).

Suncorp customer rebates at rediATMs…sort of

After hearing through the grapevine that Suncorp bank customers could use rediATMs without incurring a direct charge fee, I looked into it further. I could not find any information on the Suncorp bank website so I tried the Suncorp ATM locator.

However, using Suncorp’s ATM locator shows some rediATMs, depending on the search location, as “Designated non-Suncorp - ATM Operator Fees waived”. I did not understand exactly what that meant, so I contacted Suncorp customer service by email. They responded to me on 12th March 2009 with:  Continue reading “Suncorp customer rebates at rediATMs…sort of”

NAB, Bank West drop disloyalty fees

According to John Rolfe at the Daily Telegraph, both the NAB and Bank West have dropped the disloyalty fee for their customers using foreign ATMs. We have asked both banks to confirm this is the case, as their websites’ bank fees information still show a charge to their customers (for most accounts) to use a foreign ATM. The Disloyalty Fee page will be updated once the banks confirm.  Continue reading “NAB, Bank West drop disloyalty fees”

ATM Fee Tracker in the media plus a correction

Wow, what a day! After John Rolfe at the Daily Telegraph in Sydney picked up on our post about variable ATM fees that have the potential to exploit patrons of drinking establishments, we have spent the day being pursued by a number of media outlets. Since then we have had radio spots on 2SM with Leon Delaney, Illawarra South ABC radio with Steve Parsons and 2UE with Tim Webster. We have also filmed with ABC TV News for Sydney (I cannot confirm if that one ran though? Can anyone else…leave a comment).  Continue reading “ATM Fee Tracker in the media plus a correction”
